Medical Informatics Major

This major is a program that focuses on the application of computer science and software engineering to medical research and clinical information technology support, and the development of advanced imaging, database, and decision systems.

Includes instruction in computer science, health information systems architecture, medical knowledge structures, medical language and image processing, quantitative medical decision modeling, imaging techniques, electronic medical records, medical research systems, clinical decision support, and informatics aspects of specific research and practice problems.

What can you do with a major/degree in Medical Informatics Major?

In the capacity of a Medical Informatics professional, you will apply knowledge of medical, medicine, health, and information systems to assist in the design, development, and continued modification and analysis of computerized medical and healthcare systems. Abstract, collect, and analyze treatment and follow-up information of patients. You may be responsible for educating staff and assisting in problem solving to promote the implementation of the medical and healthcare information systems. May design, develop, test, and implement databases with complete history, diagnosis, treatment, and medical/health status to help monitor diseases.

 

At the minimum an associate degree is highly recommended.  As well, certification is often required.  Programs in medicine, health and information technology typically include courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, communication, health data requirements and standards, classification and coding systems, healthcare reimbursement methods, healthcare statistics, and computer systems.
