Lactation Consultant Major

This major is a program that prepares individuals to provide lactation management services and breastfeeding support to women, and to work as a Lactation Consultant in a variety of clinical settings.

Includes instruction in anatomy and physiology of lactation, nutrition, breastfeeding techniques and technologies, common concerns and solutions, management of special situations, breastfeeding instruction, professional and legal concerns, and advocacy.

If you work as a Lactation Consultant, you are a healthcare professional who specializes in the education and clinical management of breastfeeding.  It is your job to help new mothers with every aspect of breastfeeding.

 

Job opportunities for lactation consultants are very strong in the future as this career subsector is expected to see a twelve percent (12%) growth 2018-2028.

 

You are not required to be a registered nurse in order to begin working as a lactation consultant. However, it is important to make sure that you have the requirements included in your bachelor’s degree program.  This includes an education and understanding in biology, anatomy and physiology, infant and child growth development, counseling, nutrition, and psychology are important.  As well, clinic time built into the degree program is essential.  Then, take the exam to become certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners to become a licensed Lactation Consultant.
