Audiology/Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathology/Pathologist Major

This major is an integrated program that prepares individuals to work as both audiologists and speech-language pathologists.

Includes instruction in a variety of communication disorder studies, audiology, speech pathology, language acquisition, and the design and implementation of comprehensive therapeutic and rehabilitative solutions to communications problems.

What can you do with a major/degree in Audiology/Audiologist and Speech-Language Pathology/Pathologist Major?

As a Audiologist/Speech Language Pathologist, it is your job to assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent communication and swallowing disorders in children and adults. Speech, language, and swallowing disorders result from a variety of causes, such as a stroke, brain injury, hearing loss, developmental delay, Parkinson’s disease, a cleft palate, or autism.  As well, you may fit hearing aids and provide auditory training.  You also may perform research related to hearing problems.

 

Job opportunities for audiologist/speech language pathologists are extremely likely in the future as this career subsector is expected to see a twenty-five percent (25%) growth 2019-2029.

 

Speech-language pathologists typically need at least a master’s degree. As well,  Audiologists need a doctoral degree and must be licensed in all states. Requirements for licensure vary by state.  The doctoral degree in audiology (Au.D.) is a graduate program that typically takes 4 years to complete. A bachelor’s degree in any field is needed to enter one of these programs.
