Materials Engineering Major

A Materials Engineering major/degree prepares individuals to apply mathematical and materials science principles to the design, development and operational evaluation of materials and related processes used in manufacturing in a wide variety of settings; the synthesis of new industrial materials, including marrying and bonding composites; analysis of materials requirements and specifications; and related problems of system design dependent on materials factors.

Includes instruction in materials science and engineering, manufacturing processes, process engineering, assembly and product engineering, manufacturing systems design, and manufacturing competitiveness.

What can you do with a major/degree in Materials Engineering?

If you have a job as a Materials Engineer, you likely will be responsible for the development, process, and test materials used to create a wide range of products.  Materials engineers typically have a bachelor’s in materials science and engineering or in a related engineering field.  Completing internships and cooperative engineering programs while completing your undergraduate program can be helpful in getting hired as a materials engineer.

Trade Associations and Professional Organizations in Materials Engineering

Professional associations are groups of specialists dedicated to topics in particular fields. Professional associations provide a wealth of online resources, some of which are geared specifically towards students. These organizations typically also host conferences and events, providing great opportunities for learning and networking across your field of interest.
