Laser and Optical Engineering Major

A Laser and Optical Engineering major/degree program prepares individuals to apply mathematical and scientific principles to the design, development and operational evaluation of optical systems, lasers, and related electronic devices.

Includes instruction in wave theory and mechanics, electromagnetic applications, linear and non-linear optics, photon detecting, laser beam properties, directed energy, harmonic generation, optical systems, shielding and the design and implementation of related systems and equipment.

What can you do with a major/degree in Laser and Optical Engineering?

With a major/degree in Laser and Optical Engineering, you may participate in testing laser systems or the development of applications for lasers.  Such areas include (but are not limited to) telecommunications, manufacturing, construction, medicine, and defense.  Other career areas that may provide opportunity include robotics, scanning, printing, and holograms.

Trade Associations and Professional Organizations in Laser and Optical Engineering

Professional associations are groups of specialists dedicated to topics in particular fields. Professional associations provide a wealth of online resources, some of which are geared specifically towards students. These organizations typically also host conferences and events, providing great opportunities for learning and networking across your field of interest.
