Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering Major

A major/degree in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering will prepare individuals to apply mathematical and scientific principles to the design, development and operational evaluation of biomedical and health systems and products such as integrated biomedical systems, instrumentation, medical information systems, artificial organs and prostheses, and health management and care delivery systems.

Includes instruction in statistics, calculus, and differential equations as well as basic courses in chemistry and physics.  The math and sciences courses of this major/degree are typically focused on before undertaking biomedical engineering courses (biomechanics, biomaterials, bioinstrumentation, and bio systems modeling).

What can you do with a major/degree in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering?

A major/degree in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering will provide you with the opportunity to work in hospitals, universities, private industry, or research laboratories. You may be employed by regulatory agencies, medical device manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and medical research institutions.  Of note is the job sector of bioengineering and biomedical engineering that includes research and development of artificial organs and tissues, mechanical replacements for body parts, and equipment for medical diagnosis and treatment.  As well, designing, installing, maintaining, and operating biomedical equipment in labs or healthcare facilities.

Trade Associations and Professional Organizations in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering

Professional associations are groups of specialists dedicated to topics in particular fields. Professional associations provide a wealth of online resources, some of which are geared specifically towards students. These organizations typically also host conferences and events, providing great opportunities for learning and networking across your field of interest.
